The Whole World Stims

Series Statement:

Everyday I’m understanding more and more about how I understand and see the world. Increasingly I’m aware of the influence of movement and my heightened response to color can have on all five of my senses (like nails on a chalkboard or an itch I can’t scratch). When dealing with this in neurotypical situations I might do the same movement or say the same thing over and over again. This is called “stimming,” and it helps me to regulate my senses. In many cases this physical response is so forceful stimming is not enough. In these instances, I need to literally withdraw myself, and as an artist this is when I produce very gestural/minimalist representations of what I’m sensing.

As I’ve become more self-aware of these things it has caused me to question who is stimming more? Am I stimming to manage these movements and pulsing color intensity or am I just reacting to the world, which is moving, stimming, and blaring color?  This is never more evident than when I’m engaging with and observing other people and/or the physical figurative form.
